The Food Critic Profession

Perhaps one of the most desired jobs in the world is as a food critic. These people go to good restaurants on a regular basis where they have their meal payed for and all they need to do is write a review of the service and the food. However, there is much more involved in how to be a food critic than just eating. The person must have a good palette and be able to identify subtle flavors to give an educated appraisal of the quality of the food. On the other hand, there are definitely some perks in writing reviews for restaurants as a profession.

Also known as a restaurant critic, a person who wants to be a food critic must find an outlet for their opinions. There are only a small number of magazines in the United States that deal with restaurant reviews and only the best restaurant writers are able to ascend to the critic position with these publications. A more common job placement is with a regional or local newspaper that evaluates restaurants in a given geographical region. Therefore, the food critic must take the good with the bad and be willing to go where the editors send them. In time, a food critic will become known by the restaurants and the level of service will obviously be higher when the critic is dining.

In modern times, many people have decided to become a food critic on their own and without pay. There are many blogs and websites that are dedicated to restaurant reviews and they have become almost as popular as noted food critics like Gail Simmons. The reason that these amateur reviews are given the same credibility is because there is often no ulterior motive and the diner’s experience will be more representative than that of a known food critic.
